The first known publication was in the Troy Sentinel (New York), December 23, 1823, Tuesday, page 3, column 5 of 6.  The poem was allegedly submitted by Harriet Butler of Troy to Editor Orville L. Holley.  

Tradition has it that Moore wrote it Christmas Eve, 1822 for his family, even though it is labeled "For The Sentinel" in the paper.

The New York Historical Society has an original.
